“Before it was magazines and newspapers, but now it’s all about posts.”
-Marisol Barrios
As the social media becomes a more prominent part of society, it impacts the fashion industry in many ways. This is Marisol Barrios, a stylist at Neiman Marcus on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. I interviewed her on her view of how our generation’s use of social media influences high-end retail in today’s society. She discussed how social media has liberated people from following the standard trends from before. “People are starting to dress a lot differently and more carefree,” Barrios said.
She explained how the outreach that brands have with their followers allows their ideas to be shared on a scale much larger than ever before.
She also highlighted the pros and cons about social media’s role in fashion today. One of the cons is the pressure to attain these expensive labels. When many influencers post designer fashion, it normalizes it. It makes their follows want to indulge in these trends. Barrios noted that social media can also provide a way for audiences to copy expensive looks for a more affordable price.
There is no doubt generation Z has intertwined social media with the fashion industry. Brands are now connected more than ever to the needs and feedback of their followers. Barrios sees a positive future for brands as they cater more towards their audiences and allow us, the followers, to inspire trends.
