In The Cut

Throughout the last decade the barbershop industry has transformed. The new era can be attributed to a population hooked on their looks and a generation of barbers that have introduced strategic marketing skills.  Christian Perez is a hair stylist in the Chicagoland area who I interviewed to discuss how the industry has evolved.

Barbershops continue to be a staple in American culture after many years but have gone through some significant changes. “It’s a lot different now because there is a lot more opportunity now especially with social media,” Perez said. The rise of social media has caused people to pay more attention to the way they look, creating a high demand for skilled barbers.

Social media serves as a branding platform for individuals to reach wider audiences. With trends changing rapidly, consumers use social media posts for reference instead of print books. This also allows hair stylists to keep up with new looks and advertise their own work.

Perez also mentioned how a successful profile can lead to brand collaborations. “It could bring you sponsorships like for clippers, hair products, or hair color,” Perez said. “Opportunity for sponsorships are high. They want barbers that are big social media influencers to help brands.”

Social media isn’t only important as a portfolio, it’s become an essential way of staying in touch with clientele. Apps like Instagram include booking features that allow customers to schedule their appointments in advance.

Despite the importance of social media, the in-person relationship with customers remains key to building a clientele. For Christian, the connection with his clients are a priority. “My clients show their loyalty and I show it back,” Perez said. “We’re beyond just a haircut, it’s like a real cool friendship, too. I feel like anyone who sits in my chair can say that and vouch for me.”
