Hair Me Out

Shemaree Campbell, 24, is a hairstylist from Chicago who has had a passion for hair her whole life.  She has turned that passion into a career, styling professionally for five years now.

She started her business during her freshman year at Loyola University Chicago, where she recently graduated, while working at a grocery store. She began taking clients and instantly knew her talent was an untapped business opportunity.

“I just stopped going into work one day,” Shemaree said. “I’ve been doing hair ever since.”

She uses social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to promote her work and connect with clients.

“I let the clients come to me with their ideas” she said. For her, the ability to be flexible and keep up with trends online is a vital part of the hustle in the beauty industry.

Shemaree specializes in knotless braids, an intricate and time-consuming process that requires patience and precision which she says sets her apart from other artists.

“I’ve done hair for ten hours at one point,” she said. Her dedication and attention to detail have helped her book some notable clients, such as professional basketball player Tyler Ulis, social media influencer Kandyce Hogan and Black Ink Crew’s Nekia.

“The support runs deep in our community,” she said. Being a young Black woman has fueled the motivation she has in pursuing an entrepreneurial path. She recognizes the importance of supporting Black owned businesses.

“We need to build the black dollar and the community,” Shemaree said.

She realizes she is a role model to girls around her who are considering starting their own businesses and has words of advice for them:

“Be confident, take the leap of faith, and be consistent.”
