The Lens of Truth

Benjamin Cruz, 36, also known as @thelensoftruth, is a photographer known for his aerial cityscape shots and cyberpunk editing style.

Originally from the Philippines, he moved to Hong Kong at a young age and then to the United States at the age of 13.

Transitioning in his early teen years wasn’t easy, and like any teenager he was more interested in making friends than his classes.

He had trouble focusing until one class captured his attention: photography.

In 2002, he delved into the beginning of his photography journey, becoming acquainted with dark room techniques and film photography.

The many aspects of photography fascinated him. It became an obsession spending sleepless nights watching videos. He was determined to learn about photography, including lighting, focus and other ways to master his camera.

“I would fall into a rabbit hole,” Benjamin said. “I wanted to learn all of it.”

The turning point for Benjamin was when he was on the brink of moving somewhere warmer. Then he realized how truly beautiful Chicago is and the wonders of capturing all four seasons through the lens of his camera. There was no turning back.

He began with an open mind gaining experience through different types of photography including landscape, portrait, weddings and food.

“I took any gig that landed on me,” Benjamin said.

Since then, he has amassed over 11,000 followers on Instagram and attributes his loyal following and to his photos, especially the cityscape shots captured with drones.

Getting the perfect shot can be a process, Benjamin sets up early to scope out places and test shots.  He did this for a shot of the Chicago Henge, which can be seen on the spring equinox, where the sun peeks through the buildings of the city and could be seen from the train station.

During the Polar Vortex, Benjamin made a trip out to North Avenue Beach in negative 53-degree weather, risking his life for a shot of the city that had frozen over.

“I like the adventure,” Benjamin said.

He tells others who want to dedicate their life to their passion: “You have to have heart,” he said. “Commit to your decision.”
